Former F.W. Sullivan’s to be sports lounge

The owner of Jay’s Restaurant & Lounge has leased the former F.W. Sullivan’s space in downtown Fredericksburg.

Sanjay Sharma said that he plans to open an as yet unnamed sports lounge at 407–409 William St. by the end of January.

“I want to do something downtown, and this option came up,” he said. “I think I can bring a different concept to downtown.”

Sharma finalized a lease Monday with Tommy Mitchell on the 7,500-square-foot former restaurant. Mitchell had considered subdividing it, but Sharma plans to use the entire building.

F.W. Sullivan’s closed in July. Three previous restaurants and bars—Longstreet’s American Eatery, Las Palmas Café and University Café—also all opened and closed there within the past several years.

Sharma worked in the corporate restaurant business in the metro Washington area for 25 years before opening Jay’s Restaurant & Lounge on Sept. 1, 2012, in Greenbrier Shopping Center off State Route 3.

He will continue to run that business, which is in a 6,000-square-foot space that had previously been the home of Mexico Lindo. It took him more than a year to renovate and turn it into an elegant restaurant and lounge where customers can celebrate special occasions over dinner, meet business clients for tapas and drinks, or dance the night away.

Sharma said that the former F.W. Sullivan’s space shouldn’t need as much work, and hopes to be in there much faster.

“I like Fredericksburg,” he said. “I thought that rather than go somewhere else to open another restaurant, I should do another one here.”
