Linda Arnold sold Monkee’s of Fredericksburg today to its manager for an undisclosed sum.

The new owner, Catherine Sullivan, has run the women’s clothing boutique at 827 Caroline St. since February of 2009.

“Monkee’s has been my second home for almost five years and am I honored to be the new owner,” said Sullivan, who began working there in October of 2008.

And the Arnolds, she said, have treated her like family.

“My favorite part of working at Monkee’s is helping customers look and feel their best!” Sullivan said in an email about the sale. “I am looking forward to continuing to bring top designer fashions to our amazing customers in Fredericksburg.”

Arnold opened Monkee’s six years ago. Last year she and her husband moved to Winston–Salem, N.C., to be closer to their two oldest married daughters. She continued to oversee operations through regular visits to the store, which was co-managed for a time by a third daughter, Jane Arnold.

Linda Arnold made the decision to sell the business after that daughter also moved to Winston–Salem. There already was a Monkee’s franchise store there, so she decided to open a kitchen and house wares store instead.

Southern Home & Kitchen, which will open Aug. 1, is similar to Whittingham in downtown Fredericksburg, Arnold said. Owner Bob Whittingham helped her with the business plan for the new venture.

“I hope it will be a business that our daughters will continue and grow over the years,” she said.
