Summertime is here

THE TIME IS RIGHT … : What’s on your Summer Bucket List? Tell us on our facebook page.

As mentioned in Wednesday’s post summer officially began at 1:04 this morning with the advent of astronomical solstice.  (For weather geeks summer started June 1, but who’s quibbling?)  Today is certainly a very pleasant start to what is often a torrid time of year, with a low temperature this morning of 55 degrees at the UMW weather station in Fredericksburg and a forecast high in the mid-80s.

The upcoming weekend will also feature dry and comfortable sunny weather with highs both Saturday and Sunday in the mid to upper 80s as a surface high pressure settles over the mid-Atlantic states.  As this system slides off the coast early next week temperatures will creep into the lower 90s with increasing humidity levels.  But even so that will only be a couple of degrees above normal late-June high temperatures, which is a far cry from last year’s heat.

In fact the morning forecast discussion from NWS Sterling mentions this summer is starting out much cooler than the record heat seen the past three summers (2010-12).  The end of this month is likely to bring high temperatures in the 80s versus late June 2012′s similarity to a blast furnace with 100+ degree temperatures that led into July.  That should help keep the air conditioning costs down!

Enjoy the weekend!
