Plant a tree in the ‘Burg

Want to help green up the city? Tree Fredericksburg begins its fall planting later this month and is looking for volunteers to help on Saturdays.

 Here’s the schedule: Sept. 24, 10 a.m to  noon: University of Mary Washington students and parents will plant 40 trees along College Avenue, and on campus.

Oct. 1,  9 a.m. to noon:  Powhatan Park, Cowan Boulevard. Planting for  Powhatan playground, and  around the Police Department and its memorial garden.

 Oct. 8, 9 a.m.to  noon: Huntington Hills neighborhood (off State Route 3 near Staples). Planting  50 shade trees in this neighborhood.

Oct. 15, 9 a.m. to noon:  Jackson and Kenmore streets. City employees and other volunteers will help plant trees around the Health Department.

Oct. 21, 9 a.m. to  noon:  Hazel Hill and the train station.

Oct. 22, rain date .

 Organizers say there’s no experience necessary; tools and gloves will be provided (bring your own gloves if you have some); holes are pre-dug;  at least 20 volunteers neededfor every planting ;  transportation to event can be provided.  Also,  RSVP so that  a shovel can be reserved for you .
