MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL: Stafford County’s Jarrett Parker gets call to big leagues
Stafford County native Jarrett Parker was called up to the major leagues by the San Francisco Giants on Friday.
The former Colonial Forge and University of Virginia outfielder is expected to join the Giants for their series this weekend at the New York Mets.
The 6-foot-4, 210-pound center fielder was batting .275 with 12 home runs, 58 RBIs and 11 stolen bases for the Double-A Richmond Flying Squirrels.
“It’s awesome. Since I was a little kid, this is what I’ve wanted,” Parker said in an interview posted to the Flying Squirrels website. “From when I first started playing baseball in little league, I wanted to make it to the big leagues. That’s what my goal was. It’s unbelievable. I’m still kind of in shock.”
Infielder Matt Duffy was also called up to the big leagues from Richmond. To make room for the prospects, the Giants designated second baseman Dan Uggla and outfielder Tyler Colvin for assignment.
