Virginia Tech will introduce Buzz Williams as its new men’s basketball coach in a press conference/pep rally held inside of Cassell Coliseum today at 6 p.m.

Fans are encouraged to come and get their first glimpse of Williams, who comes to Tech after spending six seasons as head coach at Marquette. The 41-year old Williams led the Golden Eagles to five NCAA Tournaments, three Sweet 16s and one Elite Eight appearance.

Williams takes over a Virginia Tech program that has finished in the ACC cellar the last three seasons and is coming off its second-lowest win total (9-22) since 1955.

The Williams hire was announced Friday. The coach met with the team Saturday and then jetted up to New York to be a guest studio analyst during NCAA tournament coverage by CBS and its partner networks.

“There’s a lot of work to be done, and that’s part of the excitement of it, to build in the premier league in the country,” Williams said of trying to make the Hokies relevant in the ACC.

Williams takes over for James Johnson, who was fired after only two years as Virginia Tech’s coach.
