CAPS is now the Talley Center for Counseling Services

The University of Mary Washington’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) center has been renamed the Talley Center for Counseling Services, following a vote on the name change by the Board of Visitors this week.

According to a university newsletter, the new title for CAPS honors a significant gift from Betty Dobbins Talley.

Talley received sociology degree from Mary Washington College in 1968 and went on to earn a master’s degree in education from Florida Atlantic University.

She has dedicated her career to helping students achieve their educational goals, said the release.

The gift creates an endowment to support student counseling services by improving outreach and prevention efforts for early recognition of at-risk behaviors.

The name change is part of a concerted effort by the school to rename departments and rooms based on campaign contributions.
