Two University of Mary Washington seniors have received first round bids to the 2014 National Debate Tournament, to be held at Indiana University in March, according to a university release.
The seniors, Colin McElhinny and Thomas Pacheco have competed at nine tournaments this season, including debates at Harvard, Dartmouth and Wake Forest, placing in the top three at those events.
This year, 16 pairs of debaters received first round bids to the tournament, which will be held March 28-31, based on their performance at events during the regular season.
Other bid recipients include teams from Berkeley, Georgetown, Harvard, Kansas, Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern, Oklahoma, Rutgers, Towson, Wake Forest and West Georgia.
This is McElhinny’s second bid and Pacheco’s first.
This is the fourth time in six years that UMW students have been recognized as one of the top 16 teams going into the National Debate Tournament.
