Belmont hosting nativity exhibit

According to a University of Mary Washington release, the Gari Melchers Home and Studio will offer an investigation of Christian pictorial art in December.

“Laud to the Nativity: Images of Christ’s Birth through the Ages” begins on Sunday, Dec. 15 at 2 p.m.

Visitors can also view the collection set to the music of Ottorino Respighi’s “Laud to the Nativity” earlier, at 1:30 p.m on Dec. 15.

This illustrated series is the second in curator Joanna Catron’s investigation of Christian pictorial art.

“The Nativity scene is a very old subject with complex meaning,” Catron said in the release. “I uncover the origins of the Nativity’s cast of characters, their theological underpinnings, and the richly varied way in which the holy imagination has fostered a connection with God through this 2,000-year visual tradition.”

Admission to the exhibit is included with museum admission.

Call the museum at 540-654-1015 with questions, or visit the museum’s website here.
