UMW hosting lecture on Rosa Parks’ legacy of activism Monday

Jeanne Theoharis, professor of political science at Brooklyn College, CUNY, will offer a lecture titled “The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks” at the University of Mary Washington Monday.

The lecture is sponsored by the Race and Revolution freshman seminar class at UMW, who have sponsored a number of events about civil rights this semester including September’s Gaye Adegbalola’s performance, and the James Farmer Lecture and Postdoctoral Fellowship Committee.

Theoharis recently published a book with the same title as Monday’s lecture about Park’s activism before and after the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott, challenging the perception of Parks as an accidental participant in the civil rights struggle.

The 4 p.m. event, in Dodd Auditorium, is free and open to the public.
