The University of Mary Washington‘s 2013 homecoming on Oct. 26 is less than a week away. During the event, the Fredericksburg campus invites alumni to return, attend athletic events, and for the first time in recent memory, tailgate.
Here’s a rundown of weekend activities for students and alumni to attend on Saturday (or for residents of College Heights who would rather escape the fanfare to mark on their calendars):
11:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.: UMW Alumni Tailgating at the Battlefield Athletic Complex along Hanover Street. Tailgating for the homecoming hockey and soccer games was reintroduced at UMW this year. At the alumni tent will be food, drinks and “a great view of the soccer games.” According to the university, “this new exciting aspect of homecoming bridges a gap to the past, when tailgating on game day was an annual tradition at the university.” Find more information, including maps, purchasing information, tailgating agreement and the new UMW tailgating policy here.
1 p.m.: Women’s Field Hockey Game v. Frostburg State University. The first athletic event of the day, at the Battlegrounds complex, is women’s field hockey.
1 p.m.: Women’s Soccer Game v. Frostburg State University. Also against Frostburg State and also a women’s sport, the soccer game will be played concurrently with field hockey. It’s also at the Battlegrounds, so you don’t have to choose one or the other.
3:30 p.m.: Men’s Soccer Game v. Frostburg State University. Stick around the Battlegrounds complex after the female sporting events for the men’s soccer game. And remember, tailgating lasts through 4:30 p.m.
7 p.m.: Homecoming concert featuring headliner Grouplove. As part of the Campus Consciousness tour, Giant Productions, UMW’s student-run event company, booked Grouplove, The Knocks and Saints of Valory to perform at the Anderson Center for homecoming. Grouplove released their most recent album “Spreading Rumours” on Sept. 17, but are best known for their 2011 single “Tongue Tied.”
Also as part of homecoming weekend, the class of 2008 will celebrate its five-year reunion on Saturday. The class party will be held at Capital Ale House beginning at 6:30 p.m. A $15 charge covers a private room and heavy hors d’oeuvres. If you have any questions about the reunion contact the alumni relations office at 540/654- 1011, or email email@example.com.
