UMW to test area warning system Thursday

The University of Mary Washington will conduct quarterly testing of their Area Warning System on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 10:17 a.m. on the Fredericksburg, Stafford and Dahlgren campuses.

The test is in conjunction with the second annual Great SouthEast ShakeOut, a multi-state simultaneous earthquake drill.

The ShakeOut began after the August 2011 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck Virginia, centered in the town of Mineral in Louisa County.

The earthquake was felt in most of Virginia and throughout the east coast of the U.S.  The quake and its aftershocks damaged more than 1,400 homes and businesses in Virginia.

The ShakeOut urges participants to practice these steps on Thursday to prepare for the possibility of an actual earthquake:

  • Drop
  • Cover
  • Hold on
