Online tips for Labor Day travel

If you’re hitting the road this Labor Day weekend and looking to avoid congestion, there are a couple of online tools that can help.

One online tool uses past travel trends to give you an idea of the best time to head out and return.

The Virginia Department of Transportation used travel trends from 2011 to 2013 Labor Day weekends to set up a map showing when traffic is heaviest and lightest. Click here to see the map.

Another tool is VDOT’s 511 page, which gives real-time information, including video feeds of interstate cameras throughout the state. is another online traffic tool you might find useful.
