Heavy congestion on I-95, other area roads
It may come as no surprise to veteran drivers in the area, but Interstate 95 and other main roads (i.e., U.S. 1) have been jammed with traffic since this morning.
As of about 12:40 p.m. traffic on northbound I-95 is crawling—or sitting still in some spots—from North Stafford to the Massaponax area.
A line of cars also stretches along northbound U.S. 1 from Stafford to Spotsylvania, where it is impacting the State Route 3 interchange.
It’s unclear what the cause is. There was a crash that closed lanes on northbound I-95 on the Rappahannock River bridge at about 8 a.m., but that was cleared by 8:40 a.m.
The Virginia Department of Transportation’s Kelly Hannon said there are no work zones or incidents that are affecting traffic.
“It very likely appears to be volume,” she said, noting that it could be vacationers getting an early start to their weekend.
“This is really peak vacation time,” she said.
