Chatham Bridge emergency inspection results are in
The Chatham Bridge seems to have survived the overweight tractor-trailer that mistakenly got stuck on the structure two weekends ago.
After the incident, the Virginia Department of Transportation decided to have an emergency inspection done. Crews did that work late last week.
No damage was found, VDOT’s Kelly Hannon said Thursday.
The rig, which was carrying a generator, weighed 81.6 tons, more than twice the statewide 40-ton legal limit for bridges without weight restrictions.
Police charged the truck driver with driving an overweight vehicle onto the bridge, which in this case can carry a fine of up to $40,000.
The bridge, built in 1941, is listed as structurally deficient.
