Lower speed limit on Route 17, paving in Caroline and Spotsylvania

Be ready to go slower this week on U.S. 17 in Stafford as the speed limit will be lowered in a section of the widening project.

Look for a good bit of paving on numerous secondary roads in Spotsylvania and Caroline counties. There also is paving work still being done on Interstate 95 in Caroline.

VDOT Hot Spots

Stafford County

Route 17 Southbound

(New) Beginning Monday, Sept. 23, the speed limit on Route 17 southbound between Cardinal Forest Drive and International Parkway will be reduced from 45 mph to 35 mph for a construction work zone. The speed limit reduction is in connection with the Route 17 Widening Project.

Route 644 (Rock Hill Church Road)

(New)  Monday - Wednesday, 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.; motorists will be restricted to one lane on Rock Hill Church Road between Route 627 (Mountain View Road) and Route 610 (Garrisonville Road). Crews will be milling, paving and restriping in this area.

West Cambridge Street/King Street/River Road

Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.; motorists will be restricted to one lane on West Cambridge Street/King Street/River Road in the vicinity of the Falmouth Bridge for utility relocation work associated with the Falmouth Intersection Improvement Project. Motorists should expect brief delays.

Route 616 (Poplar Road)

Monday - Wednesday, 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.; motorists will be restricted to one lane on Poplar Road between Route 17 and Route 662 (Stony Hill Road). Crews will be paving and restriping in this area.

Route 218 (Chatham Heights Road)

Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.; motorists will be restricted to one lane periodically on Chatham Heights Road between the WaWa and Castle Rock Drive for a sidewalk construction project on the westbound side of Chatham Heights Road, and along Castle Rock Drive. Project completion date is November 2013.

Spotsylvania County

Route 1115 (Maple Grove Drive)

(New) Monday–Sunday; 24-hour work zone; Starting on Monday, crews will replace a culvert on Maple Grove Drive that currently has a 20-ton weight restriction. Once the culvert is replaced, the weight restriction will be lifted. During the project, motorists will be restricted to one lane in the work zone. Traffic will be controlled by a temporary traffic signal. Work is expected to last for approximately 2 weeks.

Secondary Paving

(New) Wednesday – Friday, daylight to dusk; motorists will be restricted to one lane at various locations on the following secondary routes for paving work:

Wednesday

  • Route 645 (Sunset Road)
  • Route 1428 (Gibbs Drive)

Thursday

  • Route 1429 (Fisher Drive)
  • Route 991 (Horseshoe Drive)
  • Route 992  (Horseshoe Drive)
  • Route 705 (Jennings Lane)

Summerset Subdivision

Friday, daylight to dusk; crews will be placing stone along the shoulder at various locations in Summerset subdivision. Motorists should expect brief delays in the work zone.

Caroline County

Interstate 95 Northbound

Sunday–Thursday, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m.; paving work continues on I-95 north between mile marker 112 and mile marker 115. This work zone is located between Exit 110 (Route 639/Ladysmith) in Caroline County and Exit 118 (Rt. 606/Thornburg) in Spotsylvania County. To avoid delays, motorists may exit northbound I-95 at Exit 110 to access Route 1 as an alternate route. This paving operation will continue through mid-October.

Interstate 95 Northbound – Exit 110 (Ladysmith)

Sunday-Tuesday, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m.; the off-ramp and on-ramp at Exit 110/Ladysmith will be closed overnight on Monday and Tuesday evening for paving. The ramps will be open to traffic on Sunday evening, but motorists may experience a rougher driving surface due to milling work. Motorists should use Exit 104/Carmel Church or Exit 118/Thornburg to access I-95 northbound. The I-95 southbound exit will remain open.

Route 605 (Paige Road)

Sunday - Wednesday, 6 p.m. – 6 a.m.; motorists will be restricted to one lane on Paige Road at the bridge over I-95. Crews are patching the bridge deck.

Route 606

Tuesday - Thursday, 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.; crews will be placing stone along the shoulder on Route 606 east between the Caroline/Spotsylvania County line to Route 2. Motorists will be restricted to one lane in the work zone.

Secondary Paving

(New) Monday - Tuesday, daylight to dusk; motorists will be restricted to one lane at various locations on the following secondary routes for paving:

Monday

  • Route 756  (Chance Place)
  • Route 634  (Michaels Road)
  • Route 604  (Gatewood Road)

Under Construction

Stafford County

Route 17

Route 17 is being widening from four to six lanes between McLane Drive and Stafford Lakes Parkway, a distance of nearly 2 miles. The speed limit is reduced from 45 mph to 35 mph on northbound and southbound Route 17 between Cardinal Forest Drive and International Parkway. Motorists should be alert for periodic overnight lane closures. Project completion date is December 2016.

Route 1 Bridge over Aquia Creek

Crews are replacing the Route 1 bridge at Aquia Creek, located just south of Telegraph Road. Motorists should be alert to construction equipment entering and exiting the work zone and periodic lane closures. Estimated completion date is August 2015.

Falmouth Intersection (Route 1/Route 17/Route 218)

Utility relocation work is underway. Motorists should be prepared for brief delays and periodic lane closures on Route 1 just north and south of the Falmouth intersection. Construction work will begin in early 2014.

Caroline County

Route 600 (Frog Level Road)

Boot Swamp bridge replacement project is underway. Motorists will be restricted to one lane on the Route 600 bridge. Estimated completion date is summer 2014.

I-95 Express Lanes

NIGHT WORK

Closures occur between 9:30 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. Monday through Thursday, and between 11:00 p.m. and 9:00 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights unless otherwise noted. 

  • I-95 North from Dale Boulevard to the Prince William Parkway (Route 294) - Left lane closed Monday through Thursday from 9 p.m. to 4:30 a.m., and Friday from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. for sign structures and erosion and sediment control work.
  • I-95 North from Garrisonville Road (Route 610) to Dale Boulevard - Single lane closed Monday through Thursday from 9 p.m. to 4:30 a.m., and Friday from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. for sign structures, erosion and sediment control, and barrier work.
  • I-95 South at the Fairfax County Parkway (Route 286) - Expect intermittent full road closures Monday through Thursday from 10:30 p.m. to 5 a.m., and Friday from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. for steel erection, bridge, and overhang work.
  • I-95 South from the Prince William Parkway (Route 294) to Cardinal Drive - Left lane closed Monday through Thursday from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m., and Friday from 10:30 p.m. to 9 a.m. for excavation, grading, barrier work, sign structures, and erosion and sediment control work.
  • I-95 North from the Prince William Parkway (Route 294) to I-495- Three lanes closed Monday through Thursday from 9 p.m. to 4:30 a.m., and Friday through Saturday from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. for sign structures and bridge work.
  • I-95 South from I-495 to the Prince William Parkway (Route 294) - Two lanes closed Monday through Thursday from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m., and Friday through Saturday from 11 p.m. to 9 a.m. for sign structures, barrier, and survey work.
  • I-395 North from Seminary Road (Route 420) to I-495 - Two lanes closed Monday through Thursday from 10:30 p.m. to 5 a.m., and Friday through Saturday from 11:30 p.m. to 9 a.m. for barrier, sign structures, and drainage work.
  • I-395 South from Seminary Road (Route 420) to I-495 - Single lane closed Monday through Thursday from 10:30 p.m. to 5 a.m., and Friday through Saturday from 11 p.m. to 9 a.m. for sign structures, barrier, and maintenance of traffic work.
  • I-395/95 Reversible HOV Lanes from Dumfries Road (Route 234) to Duke Street (Route 236) - Full road closure Monday through Thursday from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m., and Friday through Saturday from 11 p.m. to 10 a.m. for excavation, backfill, barrier demolition, and conduit installation work.
  • I-395/95 Reversible HOV Lanes from Dumfries Road (Route 234) to Duke Street (Route 236) - Single lane closed Monday through Friday from 4 a.m. to 5 a.m. for excavation, backfill, barrier demolition, and conduit installation work.
  • Duke Street (Route 236) East Ramp to I-395 South - Full ramp closure Monday through Thursday from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m., and Friday from 10:30 p.m. to 9 a.m. for soundwall work. Detour: Traffic will be directed to I-395 North to Seminary Road (Route 420) West. From there, traffic should follow the signs to I-395 South.
  • Edsall Road Ramp to I-395 North - Full ramp closure Monday through Thursday from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m., and Friday from 10:30 p.m. to 9 a.m. for soundwall work. Detour: Traffic will be directed to Van Dorn Street to Duke Street.
  • Gordon Boulevard (Route 123) North and South at I-95 - Single lane closed Monday through Thursday from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., and Friday from 9:30 p.m. to 9:30 a.m. for sign structures work.
  • Old Keene Mill Road (Route 644) West at I-95 - Single lane closed Monday through Thursday from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., and Friday through Saturday from 9:30 p.m. to 9:30 a.m. for sign structures work.
  • Franconia-Springfield Parkway (Route 289) East and West at I-95 - Two lanes closed Monday through Thursday from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., and Friday through Saturday from 9:30 p.m. to 9:30 a.m. for sign structures, maintenance of traffic, demolition, and survey work.
  • Fairfax County Parkway South Ramp to I-95 South - Full ramp closure Monday through Thursday from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m., and Friday through Saturday from 10:30 p.m. to 9 a.m. for bridge and sign structures work. Detour: Traffic will be directed to ride loop ramps.
  • Backlick Road North and South from Old Keene Mill Road (Route 644) to Boudinot Drive - Two lanes closed Monday through Thursday from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., and Friday from 9:30 p.m. to 9:30 a.m. for sign structures and maintenance of traffic work.
  • Loisdale Road North and South from the Fairfax County Parkway (Route 286) to Franconia Road - Single lane closed Monday through Thursday from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., and Friday from 9:30 p.m. to 9:30 a.m. for sign structures and toll gantry work.
  • Fullerton Road East and West from Boudinot Drive to Boston Boulevard - Left lane closed Monday through Thursday from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., and Friday from 9:30 p.m. to 9:30 a.m. for demolition, sign structures, and foundation work.

DAY WORK

Closures occur Monday through Thursday between 9:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., and Friday between 9:30 a.m. and noon unless otherwise noted.

  • I-95 North from Telegraph Road to the Prince William Parkway (Route 294) - Single lane closed Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. for excavation, sign structures, paving, and bridge demolition work.
  • I-95 North from Garrisonville Road (Route 610) to Telegraph Road - Left lane closed Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. for barrier placement, equipment mobilization, sign structures, and drainage work.
  • I-95 South from the Prince William Parkway (Route 294) to Dale Boulevard - Left lane closed Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Friday from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. for sign structure installation, paving, and barrier work.
  • I-95 South from Dale Boulevard to Garrisonville Road (Route 610) - Single lane Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Friday from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. for survey, sign structures, barrier, and drainage work.
  • I-95 North from the Prince William Parkway (Route 294) to I-495 - Single lane Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. for sign structure installation, clearing, and survey work.
  • I-95 South from I-495 to the Prince William Parkway (Route 294) - Single lane closed Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Friday from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. for sign structure installation, and survey work.
  • I-395 North and South from Seminary Road (Route 420) to I-495 - Single lane Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. for survey, drainage, drilled shafts, and sign structures work.
  • I-95/395 Reversible HOV Lanes between I-495 and the Prince William Parkway (Route 294) - Single lane closed Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. for material delivery and conduit work.
  • I-95/395 Reversible HOV Lanes between Dumfries Road (Route 234) and the Prince William Parkway (Route 294) - Single lane closed Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. for earthwork, conduit, paving, and erosion and sediment work.
  • I-95/395 Reversible HOV Lanes between Turkeycock Run and Dumfries Road (Route 234) - Full road closure Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for paving, barrier, drainage, and sign structures work.
  • Gordon Boulevard (Route 123) North and South at I-95 - Single lane closed Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. for sign structures work.
  • Old Keene Mill Road (Route 644) East and West at I-95 - Single lane closed Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. for sign structures work.
  • Franconia-Springfield Parkway East and West at I-95 - Single lane closed Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. for sign structures work.

  • Backlick Road North and South from Old Keene Mill Road (Route 644) to Alban Road - Single lane closed Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. for sign structures work.
  • Fullerton Road East and West from Boudinot Drive to Boston Boulevard - Left lane closed Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. for sign structures work.
  • Furnance Road at I-95 - Single lane closed Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. for bridge work. Flagging operations will be in place.
  • Prince William Parkway (Route 294) East and West from Telegraph Road to Summerland Drive - Single lane closed Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. for erosion and sediment control, barrier, and sign structure work.
  • Joplin Road (Route 619) East and West at I-95 - Right lane closed Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. for slope and sign structures work. Two-way traffic will be directed by flaggers.

I-95 SHOULDER IMPROVEMENT PROJECT

NIGHT WORK

Closures occur between 9:30 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. Monday through Thursday, and between 11:00 p.m. and 9:00 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights unless otherwise noted. 

  • I-95 North from Dumfries Road (Route 234) to the Prince William Parkway (Route 294) - Two lanes closed Sunday from 10:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.; Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.; Friday from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.; and Saturday from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. One total temporary full road closure will occur each night at 5 a.m. for 10 minutes for restriping.
  • I-95 South from the Prince William Parkway (Route 294) to Dumfries Road (Route 234) - Two lanes closed Sunday from 10:30 p.m. to 6 a.m.; Monday through Thursday from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.; Friday from 11 p.m. to 9 a.m.; and Saturday from 10 p.m. to 9 a.m. One total temporary full road closure will occur each night at 5 a.m. for 10 minutes for restriping.

DAY WORK

Closures occur between 9:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and between 9:30 a.m. and noon Friday unless otherwise noted. 

  • I-95 North at Dale Boulevard - Right lane closed Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. for light pole foundation installation work.
  • I-95 South at Dale Boulevard - Right lane closed Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Friday from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. for light pole foundation installation work.
  • I-95 North from the Dumfries Road (Route 234) to the Prince William Parkway (Route 294) - Single lane closed Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. for light pole foundation installation work.
  • I-95 South from the Prince William Parkway (Route 294) to Dumfries Road (Route 234) - Single lane Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Friday from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. for light pole foundation installation work.
