U.S. 17 traffic shift planned
Expect a change on U.S. 17 in Stafford soon.
In preparation for the $48.9-million widening project on the oft-congested road, temporary lanes are set to open next week on a section of the northbound side of the highway, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. The new temporary lanes have been built about six feet to the left of the current lanes, in the median.
During the traffic shift, one northbound lane between International Parkway and Cardinal Forest Drive will be closed from 9 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday and from 9 p.m. Monday to 5 a.m. Tuesday.
There will be new lane markings and signs to guide drivers through the traffic shift. There also will be police and project crews to help direct traffic.
The project will widen U.S. 17 from four to six lanes between McLane Drive and Stafford Lakes Parkway. Work is expected to be completed in December 2016.
