A 34-year-old city man died after a single-vehicle crash early Monday.

According to the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office, an SUV driven by Joshua Johnson, of Ruther Glen, ran off the right side of Massaponax Church Road at about 9:15 a.m. and hit a tree head-on. The crash happened near Church Pond Road.

Johnson, 24, and passenger Jereme Vessels, 34, of Fredericksburg, were taken to Mary Washington Hospital, where Vessels eventually died. As of Tuesday afternoon, Johnson was still in the hospital with serious injuries, said sheriff’s Capt. Jeff Pearce.

Both were wearing seat belts, Pearce said.

The cause of the crash is unknown, he said, adding that the investigation continues.
