Police: FRED bus hits woman
A FREDericksburg Regional Transit driver was charged Wednesday after a woman was hit by a bus she’d just gotten off, according to Fredericksburg police.
Police said the incident happened just before 2 p.m. in the 900 block of Caroline Street. They said the woman, a city resident in her 50s, got off the bus and was taking her bicycle from the front rack when the bus pulled forward.
The front fender hit her and she fell, police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe said in an email. The bus ran over the bike, which was destroyed.
The victim was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The bus driver, 70-year-old Ruther Glen resident Charles Thornton, stopped the bus and called for help, Bledsoe said. He was charged with “failure to pay full time and attention,” a traffic infraction with a fine up to $100.
