Express lanes work to shut down section of I-95
RELATED: Weekend HOV lane-closures set again
Work on the express lanes project will completely shut down a Stafford section of southbound Interstate 95 this weekend.
There has been a digital sign in the Garrisonville area warning drivers that closures would start on Tuesday, but that sign is wrong and the Virginia Department of Transportation planned to update the information, Steve Titunik, with VDOT’s Megaprojects, said earlier this week.
Weather permitting, the closure will start at 9:30 p.m. on Friday, according to Titunik.
The section that will be closed is between exit 148 (the Marine Corps Quantico Base) and exit 143 (Route 610).
The lanes will be closed so crews can lift steel beams into place on the new Telegraph Road bridge spanning I-95, according to Megaprojects.
There will be a detour in place while the interstate is closed: traffic will leave the interstate at exit 148, then take U.S. 1 south to Route 610 in Garrisonville, where traffic will be able to return to I-95.
Megaprojects estimates that the detour will add 25 minutes to travelers’ trips.
When the work is finished, the lanes will be opened one at a time.
Below is a breakdown of how the closure will work. Each night the lanes will start to be closed at 9:30 p.m.:
- The first full closure will run from 1 a.m. to 4 a.m. Saturday.
- Full closures will again be in place from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m Sunday.
- Finally, the interstate will be shut down again from 1 a.m. to 3 a.m. Monday.
After that work is done, crews will move to the northbound side of the interstate, with periodic closures of I-95.
Megaprojects added that there will be nightly lane closures in the primary lanes, Mondays through Saturdays, as well as HOV lane closures on Saturdays, throughout the summer.
