Road work picking up

We haven’t yet reached the warm weather season when road work typically picks up, but there is plenty going on locally and to our north, where the Interstate 95 express lanes work is ramping up by the day.

Below the VDOT Hot Spots list you’ll find a long list of express lane impacts, which includes day and night lane closures in both the general purpose interstate lanes as well as the HOV lanes.

Also on I-95, be on the lookout for mobile pothole repair crews between Caroline and Fairfax.

On other area roads, Telegraph Road in North Stafford will remain closed as crews do water line work related to the Aquia Creek bridge replacement project.

I-95 Traveler Alert

Monday – Thursday, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.; crews will continue repairing potholes on I-95 north and south at various locations between the Hanover/Caroline County line and I-395 in Fairfax County.  One lane will be closed in the mobile work zone.

Stafford County

Route 637 (Telegraph Road)

(Update) Beginning at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Route 637 (Telegraph Road) will be closed to traffic at the southern intersection with Route 1 until 5 p.m. Wednesday, February 27 while crews continue work to relocate a water line in connection with the Route 1/Aquia Creek Bridge Replacement Project.  Motorists will be directed to use Woodstock Lane to reach Route 1.  Signs and electronic message boards will be in place to direct motorists around the closure.

Route 1 (Aquia Creek Bridge)

Monday – Saturday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.; One lane will be closed on Route 1 north between Rt. 610 (Garrisonville Rd.) and Rt. 637 (Telegraph Rd.).  This lane closure is in connection with the project to replace the bridge over Aquia Creek on Route 1.

Falmouth Intersection

Monday – Friday, daylight to dusk; Demolition activity continues at the Falmouth intersection.  All travel lanes on Route 1, Route 17 and Butler Road will remain open at all times. This work is in connection the Falmouth Intersection Improvement Project.

Spotsylvania County

Route 208 (Spotsylvania Courthouse Bypass, Phase II)

Construction continues on the final segment of the Spotsylvania Courthouse Bypass from Post Oak Road to just east of the Ta River near Lake Anna. Estimated completion date is spring 2013.

Route 3 Widening Project (Spotsylvania County Project)

This widening project of Route 3 is located between Chewing Lane and Gordon Road.

Stafford County

Route 1 Bridge over Aquia Creek

Crews are mobilizing equipment on Route 1 at Aquia Creek, located just south of Telegraph Road, in preparation for replacement of the bridge. Motorists should be alert to construction equipment entering and exiting the work zone. Estimated completion date is August 2015.

Caroline County

Route 207 Bridge Replacement Project

Work is underway to replace the westbound Route 207 bridge over the CSX railroad tracks. Eastbound and westbound traffic has been shifted to the eastbound Route 207 bridge. Motorists should be alert to this new traffic pattern. The speed limit has been reduced to 45 mph in the work zone. Estimated completion date is May 2013.

King George County

Route 301 Bridge over the Rappahannock River

Work is underway on the Route 301 bridge over the Rappahannock River. The bridge connects Caroline and King George counties at Port Royal. All traffic has been shifted to the southbound lanes on the bridge with one lane open to traffic in each direction. Motorists should be alert to construction activity and changes in traffic patterns. Estimated completion date is July 2013.

95 Express Lanes Project

Nighttime work–Closures occur between 9 p.m. and 4:30 a.m. unless otherwise noted.

  • I-95 reversible HOV lanes from Dumfries Rd. (Route 234) to Duke St. – Road closed Monday – Thursday nights from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. and Friday night from 11 p.m. to 9 a.m. for barrier work and conduit installation. Traffic will be directed to use the general purpose lanes.
  • I-95 north and south from Cardinal Dr. overpass to Exit 158, Prince William Pkwy. (Route 294) – Single lane closed Monday – Friday nights for ground work.
  • I-95 north and south between Pohick Rd. overpass and I-495 – Two lanes closed Monday – Friday nights for mobile survey work.
  • I-95 north and south between Pohick Rd. overpass and I-495 – Single lane closed Monday – Friday nights for ground work.
  • I-395 north and south between I-495 and Exit 4, Seminary Rd. (Route 420) – Single lane closed Monday – Friday nights for survey, barrier, drilling and drainage work.
  • I-95 south at Telegraph Rd. – Intermittent full road closure of up to 30 minutes Wednesday and Thursday nights for crane movement.
  • I-495 north and south between Exit 54, Braddock Rd. (Route 620) to Exit 174, Eisenhower Connector Rd. – Mobile single lane closed Monday – Friday nights for survey work.
  • Gordon Blvd. (Route 123) north at I-95 – Single lane closed Monday – Friday night for ground work.
  • Old Keen Mill Rd./Franconia Rd. (Route 644) at I-95 – Mobile single lane closed Monday – Friday nights for survey work.
  • Franconia Springfield Pkwy. (Route 289) at I-95 – Mobile single lane closed Monday – Friday nights for survey work.
  • Fairfax County Pkwy. (Route 286) at I-95 – Mobile single lane closure Monday – Friday nights for survey work.
  • Backlick Rd. from Fairfax County Pkwy. (Route 268) to Commerce St. – Mobile single lane closures Monday – Friday nights for survey work.
  • Fullerton Rd. from Backlick Rd. to Rolling Rd. – Mobile single lane closures Monday – Friday nights for survey work.
  • Alban Rd. from Fullerton Rd. to Rolling Rd. – Mobile single lane closures Monday – Friday nights for survey work.

Daytime work–Closures occur Monday-Thursday between 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Friday from 9:30 a.m. to noon unless otherwise noted.

  • I-95/395 reversible HOV lanes between I-495 and Dumfries Rd. (Route 234) – Single lane closed Monday – Friday for excavation, ground work and paving.
  • I-95 north and south between Exit 152, Dumfries Rd. (Route 234) and Exit 143, Garrisonville Rd. (Route 610) – Single lane closed Monday – Friday for ground work, barrier placement and equipment movement.
  • I-95 north from Cardinal Dr. overpass to I-495 – Single lane closed Monday – Friday for ground work and excavation.
  • I-95 south from I-495 to Exit 152, Dumfries Rd. (Route 234) – Single lane closed Monday – Friday for ground work.
  • I-95 south to Exit 161, Route 1 – Single lane of ramp closed Monday – Friday for ground work.
  • I-395 north and south between I-495 and Exit 4, Seminary Rd. (Route 420) – Single lane closed Monday – Friday for clearing.
  • Gordon Blvd. (Route 123) north and south at I-95 – Single lane close Monday – Friday for utility work.
  • Richmond Hwy. (Route 1) north and south at I-95 – Single lane closed Monday – Friday for ground work.
  • Furnace Rd. at I-95 – Left lane closed Monday – Friday for utility relocation. Flagger will be on site to direct traffic.
  • Stevenson Ave. at Stulz Rd. – Right lane closed Monday – Friday for construction entrance work.
  • Alban Rd. north and south from Boudinot Rd. to Fairfax Co. Pkwy. (Route 286) -  Single lane closed Monday – Friday for ground work.
  • Boudinot Rd. east and west at Alban Rd. – Single lane closed Monday – Friday for ground work.
  • Jefferson Davis Hwy. (Route 1) between Telegraph Rd. and Russell Rd. – Right lane closed Monday – Friday for detour sign installation.
  • Russell Rd. east and west from Telegraph Rd. to Purvis Rd. – Right lane closed Monday – Friday for detour sign installation and ground work.
  • Joplin Rd. underpass (Route 619) west at I-95 overpass – Road closed Monday – Friday for form work. Two-way traffic will be directed by flagger in eastbound lanes.
  • Telegraph Rd. from Russell Rd. to Midway Rd. – Single lane closed Monday – Friday nights for detour sign installation. Flagger will be onsite to direct traffic.

ABOUT LANE CLOSURES

While much construction will take place behind concrete barriers, lane closures will be necessary at certain times and these lane closures are weather permitting. In general, lane closures occur between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Night work generally occurs between 9:30 p.m. and 5 a.m. unless otherwise noted. There are no lane closures on holiday weekends. Business and residential communities will remain accessible.
