VRE schedules hearings on proposed fare rate increase
The Virginia Railway Express has announced the public hearing dates for the proposed 4 percent fare increase.
Local public hearings will be held in Stafford and Fredericksburg.
Stafford’s will be held first, at 7 p.m. on March 6, at the Stafford County Government Center on Courthouse Road. Fredericksburg’s will be held at 7 p.m. on March 27 at the Rappahannock Regional Library.
According to VRE documents, the increase would be used “to offset increases in fuel, track access fees, facilities maintenance, and annual contract escalations” with the commuter rail service.
The proposed fare increase could add an estimated $1.4 million in annual revenue, according to VRE.
The board approved an increase of up to 4 percent in December, and VRE staff members recommend that rate increase.
If approved, the increase would take effect in July.
The bump in fare prices would come on the heels of a 3 percent hike that went into effect in July.
NOTE: This blog was updated to show the correct date of the Stafford hearing (March 6).
