The Virginia Railway Express Operations Board on Friday is scheduled to vote on holding public hearings concerning a proposed 4-percent fare increase this year.
According to the VRE agenda, the increase would be used “to offset increases in fuel, track access fees, facilities maintenance, and annual contract escalations.”
The hearings will be held in March and April in Washington, D.C., Crystal City, Burke, Woodbridge, Manassas, Stafford and Fredericksburg.
The board approved an up-to-4-percent increase in December and VRE staff recommends the rate increase. If approved, the increase would take effect in July.
The bump in fare prices would come on the heels of a 3 percent increase that went into effect last July. The long-range plan calls for two more such increases by 2017.
