First, heavy rains flooded roads in surrounding counties.

The second act could be snow.

The National Weather Service is calling for snow in the early hours Friday. Not much accumulation is expected (around a half inch), but in the flooded areas (Culpeper, Fauquier, Orange) it could be more difficult to get around. And any snowfall is expected to come during morning rush hour. (Click here for the Fredericksburg Weather blog.)

The Virginia Department of Transportation will have crews on duty tonight and into the morning, spokeswoman Kelly Hannon said Thursday.

She said VDOT’s forecasts show snow hitting the area somewhere around 3 or 4 a.m., meaning many commuters could be driving on snowy roads Friday morning.
