Prep work for pipe replacement will close lanes on Spotsylvania streets
UPDATE: Because of the snow, work on Plantation Forest Drive and Loriella Park Drive has been postponed until next week, Tuesday and Wednesday.
There will be lane closures on a pair of Spotsylvania neighborhood streets the next two days while crews take soil samples in preparation for work to replace deteriorated underground drainage pipes.
The work will be done on Plantation Forest Drive and Loriella Park Drive. Work is expected to be done Thursday and Friday, lasting each day from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Flaggers will direct traffic.
The work is reminiscent of what was done on another nearby street, Windsor Drive, which underwent extensive pipe replacement work after Tropical Storm Lee in September 2011. It took months to complete the project. The heavy storms were part of what caused the washout, but the pipes had already deteriorated because of the highly acidic soil in that area.
Crews likely will do similar work on Plantation Forest Drive and Loriella Park Drive, which runs parallel to Windsor. They will take soil samples, which will be used to help “design the appropriate foundation” for the new drainage pipe, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
