New Route 3 traffic signal to be activated; pair of bridges to be closed
Two projects will affect traffic in Spotsylvania next week.
The first project will lead to the closure of two old, weight-limited bridges on Spotswood Furnace Road.
The closures will take effect Wednesday, but it’s not clear how long the bridges will be closed for the repair work.
Recent inspections of the 1930s era bridges over Pipe Dam Run and Laroque Run “revealed structural deterioration on both structures,” said Tina Bundy with the Virginia Department of Transportation.
The work will include replacing the timber deck with concrete slabs and asphalt surface.
VDOT will announce the timeframe of the work in the coming weeks.
In the meantime, those who are used to crossing the bridges will have to take a four-mile detour: River Road to Route 3 to Elys Ford Road to US Ford Road and back to Spotswood Furnace Road.
About 450 vehicles use the bridges each day, according to VDOT.
The other Spotsylvania project will be the activation of a new traffic signal on State Route 3 at Orange Plank Road, a spot where traffic typically can back up in the westbound turn lane, prompting impatient drivers to dart in front of eastbound Route 3 traffic.
On Monday the signal will begin operating in flashing mode, said Bundy. On Wednesday it will go into full service.
