Stafford supervisor hit by tractor-trailer

Stafford County Supervisor Jack Cavalier survived being struck by a tractor-trailer along Interstate 95 Sunday night and remains in Mary Washington Hospital, where he underwent surgery.

Jack Cavalier suffered broken bones and other injuries Sunday night after being hit by a tractor-trailer.

“He’s lucky to be alive,” said Paul Milde, a fellow Stafford supervisor who visited the 53-year-old Cavalier at the hospital. He said Cavalier suffered broken bones and other injuries, which required surgery Sunday night.

Cavalier’s Chevrolet Suburban apparently broke down near southbound exit 143 in Stafford. He got out and “that’s all he remembered,” said Milde, who added that Cavalier seemed okay, was coherent and talking about county issues.

The Virginia State Police said the incident happened at about 8:30 p.m. on southbound 95. Spokeswoman Corinne Geller said that the supervisor’s Suburban was stopped on the shoulder and that Cavalier got out and was standing “next to it in the right lane when he was sideswiped by a tractor-trailer.”

She said the driver of the tractor-trailer had swerved to avoid Cavalier and that the driver stopped after the incident and called authorities.

No charges have been filed. The investigation continues.
