Leeland Station VRE lot opening Wednesday
Starting Wednesday, Virginia Railway Express riders will have a new paved parking area to use at the Leeland Station lot in Stafford.
The state-funded $2.2-million expansion adds 196 spaces to the lot, pushing the total to 845.
Officials with VRE along with elected officials from Stafford and the state held a grand-opening ceremony Tuesday in the new section.
“We’re staying ahead of the demand” for commuter parking, said Stafford supervisor Paul Milde.
While the expansion is adding spaces, officials aren’t sure if they’ll be able to keep using the overflow gravel lot at Leeland. Milde said they are negotiating with the property owner.
Another VRE parking expansion project, at the Brooke Road VRE lot, is moving along, Milde said. That $2.2-million project will add 230 spaces to the lot, which is on track to open in November.
