All area traffic lights working

While thousands of area residents and businesses are still without power, at least all of the traffic lights are working. On Monday only a handful of area signals were still down, but that changed this morning.

The Virginia Department of Transportation announced early today that the few remaining traffic signals knocked out by Friday’s storm are back online.

VDOT estimated that 70 signals went dark in the storm, with authorities setting up temporary stop signs at some intersections and deputies directing traffic at others. At many intersections, drivers had to go it alone.

Dozens of area roads, mostly secondary, were closed because of downed trees and power lines.

As of Monday, two roads in Stafford (Greenbank and McCarty roads) and one in Spotsylvania (Ely’s Ford Road) were still closed. Those roads are still closed because of downed power lines, VDOT’s Kelly Hannon said.

The Spotsylvania Courthouse Battlefield also was closed because its main road was blocked by debris. That road is expected to be clear by noon today.
