Stafford woman charged in deadly crash
A Stafford County woman faces charges stemming from a crash Monday night that left a passenger dead.
Virginia State Police Sgt. Les Tyler said the crash happened at about 10 p.m. on U.S. 1 near Carnaby Street.
The crash happened after a southbound 1990 Mazda 626, driven by 34-year-old Stafford resident Amy Michelle Owens, ran off the right side of the road, according to Tyler.
He said Owens over-corrected and the car ran off the left side of the road, hitting the guardrail and then overturning into a wooded area.
Owens and a passenger, Sharon Elizabeth Oxley, were taken to Mary Washington Hospital.
Oxley, a 44-year-old Stafford resident, died at the hospital early Tuesday morning, Tyler said.
He added that speed was a factor in the crash, where the posted speed limit is 45 mph.
Trooper E.S. Frye charged Owens with driving under the influence of drugs and driving on a suspended license.
Tyler had no information on Owens’ injuries.
