VDOT unveils updgraded 511 system

Anyone who uses the Virginia Department of Transportation’s 511 system will notice some upgrades, which the highway department unveiled this week.

The new system includes a redesigned real-time map on its 511 website, improvements to the phone service and a mobile app.

The map offers information on traffic speeds, work zones and incidents. The map also provides details about construction zones and real-time traffic cameras, which are set up along the Interstate 95 and Interstate 66 corridors.

The phone system has improved voice recognition, and mobile apps can be downloaded on iPhones and Android phones.

“For more than a year, VDOT has been working diligently to enhance our 511 traffic information system,” said Constance Sorrell, VDOT’s chief of system operations. She said the new system is designed to enhance “user experience.”

The 511 system has been in place since 2002.
