Tractor-Trailer Hits Bridge, Causes VRE Delays

Virginia Railway Express riders experienced delays this morning after a tractor-trailer hit a railroad bridge between Woodbridge and Lorton, VRE’s Jeremy Flores announced via TrainTalk shortly after 7 a.m. Delays ranged from 10 minutes to a half hour. Prior to the accident, trains were already running under speed restrictions.

The bridge had to pass a safety inspection before trains were allowed to cross it. Flores announced at about 7:30 that trains were once again allowed to cross the bridge at normal speeds.

VRE gives out free tickets to the passengers when the delay is long enough. There are always delays in the afternoon, but VRE always keeps these delays just short enough so that they don’t have to give out the free ride tickets.

Rufus, do you actually believe that the VRE plans the length of their delays? “Let’s have a delay, but keep it short, we don’t want to have to give out FRCs!”

Delays happen, and nearly every time they’re caused by something outside of the VRE’s control — the news article we’re commenting on here is a case in point. I’m positive the VRE didn’t decide to have a truck crash against their bridge so they could be late for fun.
