BOOKSHELF: A must-have for Civil war buffs

A friend recently shared “Manassas: A Battlefield Guide,” and it proves itself the indispensable companion for the 1861 and 1862 battle sites. Written by Ethan S. Rafuse, one of the nation’s best military historians, this trade paperback from University of Nebraska Press belongs in every serious visitor’s knapsack. Using great maps, Rafuse improves on the Army’s guide to these fields,

providing hours of detail along the traditional driving route, with concise narrative about terrain, people and decisions—and what the fighting meant.

Hard to believe it was over a decade ago! I was such a baby–that whole experience was a baptism by fire, as Ed Jones told me when we were in the thick of it. Keep fighting the good fight, Hammer and The FL-S!

Would be interesting to read Dick Hammerstrom’s take on private email addresses used by elected Virginia county officials for county government business, for instance, Dale Sisson’s and Cedell Brooks/King George County.
