THE FRONT PAGE of The Free Lance–Star on the day after Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin’s July 20, 1969, moon landing was devoted entirely to Apollo 11.

An estimated 500 million people watched the “giant leap for mankind” on television the night before, including the Norris Chamberlain family of Fredericksburg. On Page 5 of that day’s paper, they are pictured around their television set, watching the broadcast. On Page 4, an editorial focuses on the momentous occasion, and photographs of the astronauts fill another page.
