Missouri defensive lineman and senior Michael Sam has announced he’s gay and intends to become the first openly gay player in the NFL. Sam is projected to be drafted somewhere between the 4th and 7th round. He’s also last year’s SEC defensive player of the year.
There’s already speculation that he may not fit into the NFL because of his size and his talent. Now there’s talk that he may not fit because he’ll be a distraction…and of course there is still homophobia in the world of NFL’s jocks.
We’ve seen so many NFL players, and professional athletes in other sports, become guilty of the labels I put into the cartoon. If they can play, their transgressions are usually pushed aside and they’re signed to a team. It’s a shame that being gay is more of a liability.
Some day coming out will cease to be news and I’ll stop drawing cartoons about it. We’re not there yet.
