A few self-killed cartoons.
Here’s some “roughs” I’ve drawn over the past couple of weeks that for one reason or another, I decided wasn’t good enough. A “rough” is an idea drawn out on simple copy paper for me to show my editor, and to show myself how it may look. Sometimes I like them more than the finished product.
I kinda liked this one (which is why I’m showing it first). The problem I found with it was that it was too “matter of fact.” There’s not really a joke in there, just an irony or hypocrisy. Maybe I should have gone with it.
I wasn’t fond of the ledge-cliche thing. So this didn’t even make it to my editor.
This one just sucked. It was drawn late last week.
My editor killed this one and after he said it was “light” for me, I hated it too. I don’t always disagree with my editor when he kills a cartoon. Sometimes I think it’s bizarre when he kills one I think is really good. Other times when he kills one I take it as a challenge to do better.
Now that I scanned these I can trash them and get ‘em off my desk. There’s actually about ten more on my desk that I’m not even getting around to scanning and blogging.
