Mission Accomplished, Stupid
I was trolling around on Facebook and one of my conservative colleagues posted that Obama deserved ZERO credit for Gadhafi’s death. That’s entirely wrong. I don’t believe the rebels in Libya would have had any success without NATO air support. That does give credit to Obama and every western leader who authorized their troops to provide air support to the rebels. It’s just a fact. Now I believe the new government should reimburse the United States and those western nations after they get their oil production back in gear.
I also saw a poll the other day that gave Obama a 60% approval rating for his handling on terrorism. In fact, Obama has been a very successful president when it comes to foreign policy. During the last twenty years only Democratic presidents, Obama and Clinton, have been successful with foreign policy. It’s an area Republicans are supposed to be good with, but in actuallity they’ve sucked.
Unfortunately for Obama, that’s not gonna help him get reelected. The public is only concerned about the economy at this point and Obama, who did inherit a lousy economy, has only seen it grow worse. I think the guy, along with Bush, helped keep it from getting worse with the first bailout. I also think his bailout of the auto industry saved a lot of jobs. But he’s spent a lot of money to see the economy not get any better. When you’ve given three bailouts it’s hard to get another economic bill passed, which is what his jobs bill is. Plus, Republicans just like saying no to him anyway.
Even though the Republicans don’t have any answers to fix the economy, and they’re the ones that let the economy sink under their watch, they’re still going to roast Obama on the issue.
While the public is happy with foreign policy success, they want to see jobs grow and the economy improve. Right now it is “the economy, stupid”.
Here’s the rough.
I had another idea and it involed a sinking ship and a rat. Then I thought both metaphors were too cliche. Then I saw one cartoonist use a rat this week, Titanic last week and another used a sinking ship over the weekend. That just really confirmed it was too obvious or overdone, so I went back to the drawing table. I like reading other cartoonists’ work, but I also benefit to see what else is out there. Here it is.
