Blalock Censure

Last December the Spotsylvania School Board conducted a secret meeting and decided to censure board member Amanda Blalock. Her crime was using her school board account for personal matters. From what I read there wasn’t anything very scandalous within the emails. Now the Virginia Freedom of Information Advirsory Council has suggested that the board violated the state’s open meeting law by holding a secret meeting to do something they didn’t have the authority to do. A lot of times it seems a simple “hey, stop doing that” would suffice instead of taking an action which makes front page headlines and gets you mocked by the local cartoonist. Good job, school board.

You read the e-mails and didn’t see anything scnadalous? That speaks volumes about your moral and ethical compass. The reporting on them has been very imcomplete. Even if you leave out any moral implications, there are two big issues at play in the e-mails. The first is the fact that a board member is wasting huge amounts of educational time with two educators. The other is the special favors requested for Blalock’s son. These are not moral issues. They are ethical.

If you want to talk moral issues, the e-mails are full of them. It seems Ms. Gould missed these or doesn’t think an elected official’s moral compass is fair game.

Read the e-mails for yourself and decide.

I just read the news story. I didn’t read the emails you’re specifying. I get bored going through my own old emails, less enough someone else.
Not sure if I’m gonna target someone for wasting time at work. That would make a lot of people hypocrites, including myself. Special favors are another matter. I would have to read into those.

With all due respect Mr. Jones, your reply demonstrates what is so frustrating with this whole story. The public relies on the FLS for good information. They have sat upon this story for 7 weeks and when they finally ran it, it contained some real errors and the reporter failed to ask some difficult questions.

The public shouldn’t have to go and read the e-mails for themselves. They should be able to read a good account of it in the paper. The paper should be holding public office holders to account. The paper should be an advocate for the citizens. In this instance, none of that is happening. They are not even allowing comment on the article on the web site.

You work for the paper and even you are relying on Pam gould to tell you what happened.
