Dirty Dirty Yearbook

I’m sure you’ve heard all about this story now. Most people I talked to who weren’t aware of this store responded with “cool!”.

It seems if you give kids free reign to publish whatever they want, especially if you tell them it’s OK, then they’re gonna publish something you’re not going to like. Now the school is going to spend tens of thousands of dollars reprinting the book. Somewhere between the yearbook adviser, Massaponax High School principal and Spotsylvania County School Board, is a very evident case of mismanagement. I guess I wouldn’t wanna give interviews either if I messed up on grand scale like this.

Also, who cares what people read in it? Nobody reads the yearbook unless they’re in the yearbook and the people who are in this yearbook wrote this yearbook. The only other time it’ll be looked at will be in the future when children, wives, friends, etc. look at your photo so they can laugh at you.

Here’s another thought: Instead of worrying about what’s available to be read by all the students (who also wrote it), maybe the administration should focus on some of the issues that were written about…like drugs, sex and pregnancy among it’s student body. But what do I know? I’m just a cartoonist.

Why can’t everyone stop slandering my school and let this go? The principal doesn’t deserve this.

This is pathetic. Is all the news good for is pointing out mistakes from the schools. Over these past 4 years the Spotsylvania School’s have been giving the best that any school could wish. Massaponax Alumni Becoming America’s role model, JROTC cadets earning Top 10% of 1500+ other JROTC Programs, students becoming aspiring artists and writers. Yet the only thing that the media notices is Spotsylvania High School’s plumbing back up from ’2 ply’, A broken yearbook, teachers getting fired, where our schools budget goes. Get a life and find good things to say from our schools which is too easy to even complain about and stop trying to say what mistakes had occurred and making the biggest gossip over it.

i go to Massaponax. and the student body is really tired about hearing about this. just leave our school alone, okay? this has gone entirely too far.
and, yes. you ARE just a cartoonist. so stick with what you know.

What is the purpose of a yearbook? To see and remember the people the people you went to high school with and to remember the good times. If some people want to make an artistic statement, with a book that costs $70 bucks mind you that was bought sight unseen, with this, that is not thought out very well. You want to do something like this? Publish your own book seperate from the Yearbook. Students, have fun in 10 years showing this book to your son or daughter and explaining these pages to them. What you think is cool when you are 18 is not so cool when you are a parent. You don’t understnd now, but you will. Trust me.

Students of MHS, Clay is actually for you. He wants you to have the yearbook, and he also wants to pick on you, your principal, and the school. Its a satirical cartoon, that’s why we have them. I’m sure its already a tired subject at your school but this IS reality. Face it. Your school does great things, as do most in the county, but you chose for your yearbook to have secrets. And you know what happens with secrets? Anonymous or not everyone talks, whispers, and shares them. So, grow up and deal with it. Next week there will be a riot at Courtland, or a fight in North Stafford with the cops called, and people will forget about MHS and the scandalous, yet brilliant, yearbook and the money to fix it.

By the way, I for one think it marks the era we (as a society) are in. These are your secrets, your confessions, that someone believes is inappropriate or too mature for your age group to have. The problem with that? Is that no matter how many yearbooks they take away, they can’t erase the truth from your lives.

You know what we did when I was in high school? We killed ourselves left and right. Suicide was in. Rent the DVD Heathers sometime.

Every generation has their own problems. It does not mean it needs to make the yearbook. It is a yearbook. It is not their toy to mess around with.

In this day and age it is very easy to publish your own book. They did not need to ruin this book in the eyes of many with this crap.

Also, does the FLS allow anonymous comments to be publilshed? Does any paper allow this in print? Why did this teacher think this was a good idea?

for ANON– the definition of slander is FALSE, malicious statements against an individual. so if these events NEVER happened, then yes, shame on you clay for printing slander and you should have spent your time drawing a cartoon about something that really happened.

for DBP– clay is not news, nor has he ever claimed to be. there are other sections in the newspaper that will always add to the highlight reel of a certain school’s achievements. you shouldnt look for them in the opinion section. if clay or any other political cartoonist made cartoons that focused on the positives, well, they wouldnt be very funny, now would they? as far as the rest of the media, i have news for you—they thrive on mistakes everywhere you go. society loves to watch something negative happen just so they can complain about it. the majority of society would rather buy a newspaper with the headline “teacher caught snorting coke” as opposed to “teacher wins award” if the two were next to each other. sad, but its the truth we all live in.

for all of you— if i were you guys, i’d be peeved about the fact one preventable mistake is costing 10s of thousands of your tax dollars (if those numbers are accurate, mr jones), not about what a cartoonist is saying about your school

to the cartoonist, we’re teenagers. it’s obvious we’re going to have sex and do drugs and whatever. Not all of us, but some of us. What do YOU think administration should do about it? There’s nothing we can do.
Yes, I agree what was published in our yearbook was bad, but, my God, it wasn’t this bad.
Is there really nothing else going on in the news that causes you to pick on a high school with the best standing in the county? Our pricipal has done so much for us, and you’re sort of acting like he’s a bumbling idiot.

But i can assure you, no one in my school was laughing about it.
@ Rob, it’s affecting our school. Obviously you’re not in high school, let alone in Massaponax. Have a facebook? Have students on it? This page was the only thing i saw on there. Along with posts telling people to leave our school alone. Anon is right. Mr. Rodkey doesn’t deserve this.

Please, get a life. And leave MHS alone. This is just getting ridiculous.
