Today is Earth Day and the majority of editorial cartoonists did a cartoon on it….so I went elsewhere. I hate running in packs.
The students built this shantytown and some of them even panhandled (competing with actual homeless people). Kids, ya ain’t gonna get a clue what it’s like to be homeless by building your cute little shantytown thingy. Most homeless people don’t have facebook pages or parents doing their laundry.
My editor really liked the dog. My editor told me his dog took a big poop in the bathroom and I told him he’s lucky it was in the bathroom. He said he wishes the dog could learn to use the toilet and I responded "maybe he’s waiting for you to learn first". I love burns.
Here’s the rough.
Kal did a digital W. and now he’s done a digital Hillary and Obama. Kal rocks. Kal is going beyond what most editorial cartooning animators are doing which are mostly song parodies. Rant time: The biggest part of a cartoon is the writing and that would include an animation. I think the animators are losing the focus on that. There’s so much work into doing an animation that they don’t have time to actually write the sucker. Doing a song parody is as simple as finding new rhymes which anyone with the slightest bit of creativity, or lots of spare time, can do. When people first started doing these animations I was like "this is great……and now it’s boring".
Guys, your moving drawings are really cool looking. The work you’re putting into them deserves to have a good idea. OK, rant over.
