And the rough…

I’m back.  Today was my first attempt at actually working since someone tried to run me down on Caroline St.  You won’t see much difference between the rough and the final version of this toon.  I traced the bomb from the rough for the final because I didn’t think I would draw it that well again.

How am I doing?  I’m glad you asked.  Today was hard.  It’s hard to get back into the routine after taking more than a week off.  My friend Matt Davies emailed and told me I picked a good week to come back since there were so many news subjects.  I wrote back “Yeah?  What are they?”.  I really haven’t kept up with the news much.

I’ve had a hard time sleeping and Tylenol sleeping pills haven’t helped much.  Vicoden hasn’t helped.  Doctor Fox gave me a prescription for some muscle relaxers and I took one with a Vicoden and I don’t think that kicked in until 6 am.  So I woke up at noon and realized I needed to get to work and be productive.  So I got to work, limped around a bit and drew Nancy Pelosi straddling a bomb.  OK, not my best effort but I got through the day.  I hope to do better tomorrow.  Maybe I won’t feel so drowsy.

My leg still hurts.  I can bend it more now.  I’m off the crutches and I’m not wearing the brace anymore.  I almost look normal.  I wanna thank everyone who called and wrote.  Nick, Dave, Hilary, Janet and my editors at the paper all called and offered to run errands (nobody offered a sponge bath).  I got emails from fellow cartoonists Matt Davies, Tom Stiglich, Mike Thompson (a Pulitzer finalist this year), Jimmy Margulies and Kirk Anderson.  Each phone call and email has meant a lot to me.  Thanks, everyone.  If you called and I didn’t call you back, please accept my apologies.  I’m not trying to be rude.  I was legally doped up and that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it.

I need to get back to living like a normally do.  I also need to work on the music more because 816 has an upcoming show.  I don’t know if I’ll still be limping then but limp or no limp, we’re playing.  You can check us out Friday, April 20 at Fife.  We’re doing a two hour set and we’re throwing covers and originals.  The cover is $5.  I’ll throw in more info in a later blog like time, address, etc.

I promise I’ll get the blog back on it’s regular schedule.
