The editorial page staff had a little meeting about this issue yesterday. I wanted to hear my colleagues thoughts while I was trying to find my idea. We all agreed it wasn’t the most intelligent thing for the Pope to say, but that didn’t excuse the reaction from radical islam. I wanted to do something that was a bit beyond the usual cartoons on this showing radical islam’s hypocrisy. But there really wasn’t anywhere else to take it.
More Popeyes
Sorry to be throwing all these Popeye cartoons at you. I’m trying to show how one issue can generate the same concept, over and over. It’s something I think our industry, myself included, needs to work harder at. Each cartoonists should attempt to be unique. I don’t mean to offend these particular cartoonists as I think some of them are brilliant on most days. But maybe this little exposure will make at least one of us push our mind further past that first obvious idea. This brings the grand total to 18 Popeye cartoons.
