Back in the day editorial cartoonists had to create a clip file of objects to draw. We had mounds of books and scraps of paper with images of objects, places and people we would make subjects out of. I was horrible at this as it takes time and it was generally a pain in the butt. Plus, I’m lazy and messy.
Thank God for Google. Now I can just search an image and usually find what I need. Yesterday I googled the Fruit Of The Loom guys. Ya know, those guys wearing the fruit costumes. I couldn’t do it from memory and if I had there would have been a guy in a banana suit. From my googling I discovered there’s not a banana man. There’s two grape men, an apple man and some weird fig leaffy thing man. You can check today’s fruit of the loom cartoon right here and see how I did. Fruit guys.
From looking at a stack of recent cartoons I’ve been googling a lot lately. Recent subjects I’ve googled have been New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin (he has a funny head), The entire Fredericksburg City Council, Brokeback Mountain, Marcus Vick and his number (it’s 5), a cow, Virginia Tech’s logo, USC Coach Pete Carroll, The Louisville Cardinal’s logo (surprise, it’s a Cardinal) and Pat Robertson.
Two subjects I’ve drawn lately I didn’t need to resource: George W. and Tim Kaine.
