The National Museum of the Marine Corps hosts an artifact road show Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Curators and historians will be on hand at the museum off Interstate 95 in Triangle to help you figure out just what that object is from Normandy, World War II or any other war-related item, in uncle Bill’s trunk. Along the lines of the popular PBS series “Antiques Roadshow,” the aim is for people to ask, “What is this, and what should I do with it?” According to a press release, museum experts will examine the item; give insight into its origin, and advice on the best way to preserve it. This event is free and open to everyone. Appraisals will not be done. It probably goes without saying that any potentially live ordnance would not be welcome.

The National Museum of the Marine Corps saved a place of honor for the iconic Marine. His half-ton bronze sculpture, by Pennsylvania artist Terry Jones, was placed in the Semper Fidelis Memorial Park today on a hill next to the museum. Lt. Gen Lewis “Chesty” Puller, who died in 1971, was the most-decorated Marine who served for 37 years. See my story Wednesday for more on the art and the artist.
