It didn’t take long for Marines, their families, civilian staff, and just about every one else at Marine Corps Base Quantico to hear about the shootings at the Officers Candidate School late Thursday night. The base Giant Voice System–a public address loudspeaker–gave residents of the installation an announcement as it was unfolding, before midnight. It advised: “An isolated shooting incident has occurred at Officer Candidates School…The suspect is still believed to be at large. (Base Police) and Prince William County police have been dispatched. This is the most accurate and current information we have at this time. Base residents are to follow all indsturctions being delivered by the Giant Voice System. Please remain inside your homes with your doors locked.” The Giant Voice System at Quantico, and other military installations–Naval Support System Dahlgren also has one–was put in in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and the Fort Hood shootings in 2009. In that incident at the Texas Army base, Maj. Nidal Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, shot 13 people.

If you’re hearing them today, it’s most likely ongoing training at Marine Corps Base Quantico. The base has posted a noise advisory through Friday. Today’s munitions testing is scheduled from 1-6 p.m. Base officials note that the noise intensity is affected by weather; cloudy skies reflect it and can make it more intense.
