Local Montford Point Marine remembered
Lawrence “Reggie” Lucas was a pioneer in the annals of military service. Lucas, who died on Saturday, was a member of the Montford Point Marines, the first Marine units open to blacks during World War II. I wrote about Lucas in June when he and other Montford Pointers received the nation’s highest civilian award, the Congressional Gold Medal. Read my story here. Also, see my column in tomorrow’s paper.
