A soldier from Petersburg was among two service members killed in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense says. They were shot  Sept. 1 when insurgents attacked their unit with small arms fire in Batur Village. Staff Sgt. Jonathan P. Schmidt, 28, was assigned to the 192nd Ordnance Battalion, 52nd Ordnance Group, 20th Support Command at Fort Bragg, N.C. Staff Sgt. Jeremie S. Border, 28, of Mesquite, Texas, was assigned to 1st Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group in Torii Station, Japan. So far this year, about 246 U.S. service members have been killed in Afghanistan, according to DOD and other sources; at least 45  members of the NATO-led  International Security Assistance Force have been killed this year by Afghan service members.
