Stolen Civil War documents returning to Stafford

Two 1700s documents taken from Stafford County during the Civil War are coming home.

A ceremony will celebrate their return is planned for 10 a.m. Thursday in Circuit Court #1 at the Stafford County Courthouse.

During the Civil War, Union troops took over the courthouse and took these two papers, from 1753 and 1776.

In 2005, amateur historian George Bresnick found the documents in an old trunk, in a neighbor’s attic in South Worthington, Mass. He researched them for years to find their original owners. He’ll talk about the documents during the ceremony and “repatriate” them to Stafford, where they’ll be on display for visitors, according to a county press release.
