COPS Grant Could Give Stafford More Deputies
Stafford County supervisors recently gave permission for Sheriff Charles Jett to pursue grant funds that could add up to seven new deputies to his staff. The grant is administered by the United States Department of Justice and is known as a Community Oriented Policing Services or COPS grant.
The catch is that the federal dollars cover three years of the new deputies’ salaries, but the county is obligated to cover the fourth year. A similar grant was recently awarded to Stafford County’s Fire and Rescue Department to hire seven firefighters.
Jett’s office applied for this grant in the past, but was not awarded money. Jett said that the funds were used on departments that had lost personnel, and Stafford did not qualify.
