Dear guests, Welcome…to Government Island
Ricardo Montalban would be proud.
Stafford County will officially open Government Island Nov. 6. On Monday, members of the media will get a sneak peek at the new walkway and trail that provide access to the island in Aquia Creek. You can look forward to two articles on Tuesday – one from me about the event, and one from resident historian Clint Schemmer about the significance of the site.
I have had the pleasure of visiting the island in the past, before there was easy access to the site. It is a fantastic resource – rich with history that dates back 8,000 years. More recently, its quarry provided the stone to build the U.S. Capitol and the White House.
It is a beautiful spot, tucked away behind Aquia Harbour. I highly recommend a visit when it opens. Access to the trail will be from a parking lot on Coal Landing Road.
